There Is No One Way to Start ⚜️

Every organization that reaches out to me starts from a different place.

Some post constantly on social media. Others barely touch it. Almost all of them have a head full of good ideas about what they want their site to say. Some already have a website — one they put together themselves, after a lot of real effort — but because building websites is not their expertise, it ended up simpler than what they had actually pictured.

None of that is a problem. It is just where most people start.

Rescues come first, always. Everything else is secondary and only happens when it clearly serves the same values or the people who help animals.

There is no one way to do it

Some partners call me almost every day with a new idea (Sandra at Rovers Return has said so herself). Some send everything by text message and never write a complete sentence. Some send me links to sites they like and tell me what they liked about them. Some answer a list of questions one by one. Some answer none of them and just talk.

All of those work. The method adapts to the person. The person does not have to adapt to the method.

What matters is that you have an idea of what you want, and that we keep talking while it takes shape.

Why a Scouting unit is on this site

4leggedIT originally started by supporting animal rescues. Since then, that support has grown to include other small, community organizations that help animals — and the rescues that need them.

This particular project began outside even that scope, as a goodwill favor for Unidad 51, a Scouting unit in Puerto Rico with three programs. Scouting exists to instill a set of values — the Scout Law: Trustworthy · Loyal · Helpful · Friendly · Courteous · Kind · Obedient · Cheerful · Thrifty · Brave · Clean · Reverent. I was never a Scout myself, but those are values worth trying to live by anyway, not just admire from the outside — trying to be a better version of myself, and a contributor to my community, is the point of doing any of this.

What one of their leaders wrote afterward is worth sharing anyway: the process can look overwhelming from the outside, but once you are actually working with 4leggedIT's staff, it becomes clear how easy and flexible it can be.

And that is when I realized that working with him was going to be much easier than I had expected.

What working together actually looks like

Her letter walks through the same pattern every partner goes through, just from the other side:

• It starts with a phone call, not a document.
• A draft comes before the full list of answers. Reacting to something real is easier than filling a blank page.
• Questions get answered by text, out of order, in fragments, whenever there is a minute.
• Ideas come from sites people already like, sent as links with one line about what worked.
• Changes happen while we are still talking.
