Frequently Asked Questions

This page covers the most common questions we hear from rescues, foster-based organizations, and animal welfare groups. If something isn't answered here, feel free to reach out — we're always happy to talk things through.

General

What is 4leggedIT?
4leggedIT is a volunteer-driven technology support partner for animal rescues, foster-based organizations, and sanctuaries. We help teams strengthen their online presence, organize information, and build clear, sustainable systems — so they can spend less time wrestling with tools and more time caring for animals.
Who is 4leggedIT for?
We work with small and mid-sized rescues, volunteer-run organizations, foster networks, sanctuaries, and other animal-serving organizations — whether formally registered as a nonprofit or not. We do not provide services to for-profit businesses.
Do you only support Riverside rescues?
No. While we're based in Riverside, California, we support Riverside rescues and beyond — any rescue that needs help improving their website, workflows, or technology clarity.
Do you charge rescues or animal-serving organizations for your services?

No. 4leggedIT does not charge rescue groups or animal-serving organizations for our services.

Our mission is to support organizations helping animals — regardless of size, structure, or formal nonprofit status. We provide guidance, setup, and ongoing technical assistance at no cost.

In some cases, we may even cover limited third-party expenses (such as a domain registration for one year) to help an organization get started.

Some third-party tools (like hosting, email, or specialized services) may have their own costs. When that happens:

  • Any cost is external to 4leggedIT
  • We disclose it upfront before anything is set up
  • We prioritize free tiers and nonprofit programs whenever available
  • If a free tier becomes unavailable, we help find a no-cost or low-cost alternative

You will never receive an invoice from 4leggedIT.

What does it cost to run 4leggedIT?
4leggedIT operates with a lean annual target budget of approximately $250 per year (self-funded), primarily covering essential infrastructure such as domain registration and hosting. We intentionally keep costs low so the focus remains on serving rescues and the community — not fundraising.
Do you accept donations?

No. 4leggedIT does not accept monetary donations, and we never accept money directly.

If you want to help financially, we encourage donating directly to a rescue you care about.

We do welcome non-cash sponsorships that directly benefit rescue work (for example: hosting credits, software licenses, or nonprofit tool access). We may also accept direct-to-vendor sponsorships where you pay an invoice directly to a provider (domain registration, hosting, essential tools) — with no money ever going to 4leggedIT.

  • If the sponsorship supports 4leggedIT infrastructure, 4leggedIT retains ownership/control of the vendor account.
  • If the sponsorship supports a rescue, the rescue retains ownership/control of the vendor account.
Is 4leggedIT only for animal rescues?
Our content is rescue-focused by design. However, many of the principles and technical guides apply equally well to small nonprofits, community organizations, and personal projects seeking simple, sustainable digital solutions.
Do we have to work with 4leggedIT to use your resources?

No, and that’s intentional.

Our goal is for rescues and animal-serving organizations to use our resources with or without our direct help. We openly publish step-by-step how-tos that explain how we build and operate, so teams can learn, adapt, and implement solutions independently.

This is part of our no vendor lock-in philosophy: technology should empower organizations, not trap them.

How do you ensure sustainability long term?
We focus on sustainability by keeping infrastructure minimal, leveraging AI responsibly, avoiding donor dependence, favoring off-the-shelf tools when possible, and publishing transparent documentation.
Is 4leggedIT a nonprofit?
Currently, 4leggedIT operates as an independent initiative. Future structural decisions will be guided by sustainability and mission alignment.

Services

Do you process donations or handle payments on behalf of rescues?
No. We do not manage payment processing, donation collection, or financial transactions for rescues. Instead, we help your website clearly and credibly support fundraising by connecting visitors to the donation platforms you already use.
What kinds of services do you provide?
We support rescues with:
  • Website design, modernization, and ownership guidance
  • AI-assisted content and update tools
  • Forms, applications, and workflow automation
  • Visibility enhancements for donors and grant reviewers
  • Technology guidance and vendor assessment
  • Ongoing support and stability planning
Is there a long-term contract?
No. There's no long-term lock-in. Everything we build belongs to you, and you remain in control of your website, content, and systems.
How is 4leggedIT different from rescue management software companies?
4leggedIT is not a software vendor. We provide guidance, structure, and strategic recommendations. When possible, we recommend free or nonprofit-friendly tools instead of building expensive custom systems.
Do you build custom software?
Only when necessary. Our default approach is to leverage sustainable, widely supported platforms to minimize long-term maintenance risk and cost.

Technical

What technology do you recommend?
We use tools that are transparent, sustainable, and rescue-friendly. While specific tools may vary by project, we emphasize:
  • Platform-agnostic systems
  • Version control (e.g., GitHub) for ownership and portability
  • AI-assisted editing that non-technical teams can use
  • Hosting and infrastructure that avoid vendor dependency
Do I need tech skills to work with 4leggedIT?
No. You don't need to be a developer, designer, or coder. Many of the tools we implement allow updates through simple prose or straightforward interfaces, and we always strive to reduce technical barriers — not add them.
What if my rescue already uses adoption platforms like Petfinder or RescueGroups?
That's common and expected. We help you connect or sync those listings where appropriate, improve how they're presented on your own site, and reduce duplication — but we don't replace the platforms themselves.
What does “AI-first” mean at 4leggedIT?

4leggedIT operates with an AI-first approach. This means we use artificial intelligence tools to accelerate research, drafting, structuring, documentation, and development workflows.

AI allows us to move faster, reduce costs, and refine resources continuously — while human oversight ensures clarity, accuracy, and responsibility.

Grants & Donors

How does a website help with grants?
Grant reviewers often look at websites before reading applications. A clear, current site that shows your mission, programs, policies, team, transparency practices, and contact information builds credibility before your application is even opened. We help make that information easy to find and understand.
What information should my website have to appeal to donors?
Donors care about:
  • Why you exist and who you serve
  • Real outcomes and impact examples
  • How funds are used (general categories, not detailed financials)
  • Clear contact paths and responsiveness
  • Consistency across pages and stories that reinforce mission
How can I show impact without overwhelming visitors?
Focus on specific examples and relatable stories (e.g., "In 2025, we provided medical care for 42 dogs…"). Use clear headings, simple language, and visual context (captions on photos rather than galleries without explanation).

Content & Workflow

How much content do I need?
You don't need perfect, polished copy — you just need clarity. Rough drafts, notes, or existing content are fine; we'll help organize and refine what you already have. Focus first on intent — what you want the reader to understand or do next.
What if my rescue doesn't have documented workflows?
That's normal. Many rescues operate organically without formal documentation. We help you capture how things actually work (even if it's informal) so technology supports your real process instead of forcing an idealized one.
How long does it take 4leggedIT to build a website?

It depends on multiple factors. If you supply the information and follow our Getting Started flow, we can typically have a draft website ready for your review within 48 hours.

Two of the biggest factors are:

  • Whether the rescue provides the information (fastest) or we help put it together. Start here: Get Started.
  • Whether this is a new domain name (fastest) or an existing one (slower, because it adds technical complexities). See: Transfer Domain to Cloudflare.
How often are resources updated?
We update and refine content at least weekly. Many guides in our Resources library evolve continuously based on community feedback, testing, and real-world implementation experience.

Support & Expectations

How quickly will you respond when I reach out?
We strive to respond within 48 hours, often sooner — unless we're chasing a tennis ball or wrangling dogs. Your inquiry matters, and we'll reply with clarity, not sales language.
Will you train our team on using the new systems?
Yes. We provide guidance and documentation that's human-friendly, and we aim to leave your team equipped to update and maintain content independently.
What happens after the site is launched?
We remain available for ongoing support, troubleshooting, and future improvements. Support is proactive, not reactive — focused on sustainability, not short-term fixes.

Other

What if I know another rescue that needs help?
We love community referrals! If you know a rescue that could benefit from clearer information and reliable technology support, please send them our way — or get in touch so we can connect.
Can I contribute to 4leggedIT?
Absolutely. We welcome:
  • Volunteer tech skills (developers, designers, IT pros)
  • Content and strategy contributions
  • Outreach support (sharing resources with rescue communities)
  • Operational sponsorship (non-cash): hosting credits, software licenses, nonprofit tool access, or direct-to-vendor payment for essential infrastructure

Reach out anytime — every bit of help amplifies impact.
